Because nature is a diverse biosphere of visuals, scents, sounds, tastes, and textures that endlessly captivates us with wonder, it serves as an always-available antidote to our chaotic, clock-oriented lives. By immersing in nature, allowing it to consume our senses with extravagant beauty and infinite surprise, we detach from the ego mind that worries, plans, and agonizes, and shift into a mindful state that is calm, receptive, and free of stress. Encountering nature with deep attention can transform our lives, especially when we combine three practices: Centering in Nature, Reflective Journaling, and Creative Expression

Centering in Nature: The First Step

Centering in nature is an adaptation of a spiritual exercise called terra divina. As a spiritual act, the purpose of terra divina is to deepen one’s relationship with God by “reading the earth,” and reflecting on the feelings and impressions that arise for guidance.

As a secular, centering practice, we use every sense to encounter nature in a deeper way in order to still the mind and restore our inner balance. Like terra divina, there are four parts to the exercise: Preparing, Receiving, Reflecting, and Releasing.

Centering in nature simply calls for attention. Any time we find ourselves on the brink of emotional collapse, we can restore our balance by reading nature and regaining our center.
